Predictably, Crimson Shroud is infuriatingly difficult and we’ve got to say we really don’t understand why.

Unusually there is no levelling up either, so it’s not as if you can just grind your characters through a few levels and then expect the rest of the game to be a cakewalk. The basics may at first look the same as any Japanese role-player but there are very few battles that can be taken for granted, so there’s no just clicking the most powerful attack and letting the game get on with it. These include elemental strengths and weaknesses, the ability to speed up or skip turns, a whole range of status buffs to apply to your characters, and whether to focus your attacks on being more accurate or more powerful. This random element isn’t hiding a lack of strategic choice either, as there’s a hugely complex range of factors to consider. But most role-playing games, even Western games like Fallout and Skryim, do this and Crimson Shroud is really just being more honest about things. Grab them with the stylus and the strange future-retro atmosphere is complete.ĭice rolls decide almost everything in the game, from whether you’ve dodged a trap to how much damage you’ve dealt a monster. The three main characters all have their own distinct personalities and agendas though, and the game sensibly ensures that many of the cut scenes are optional – only forcing you to sit through the most important ones.Įven more obvious clues as to the game’s retro aspirations are in the fact that instead of hiding behind virtual dice rolls there are actual physical die sitting on the touchscreen. The narration (all text, there is no spoken dialogue) is made to read as if a dungeon master is guiding you through the game, and if you have ever played a pen and paper role-player you’ll get the references immediately.īut to be honest though the script, or at least the translation of it, is mediocre and the stock fantasy plot about finding the titular shroud is not terribly gripping. You can also see specifically Japanese influences in the storytelling, much of which plays out like a visual novel. Both Japanese and Western role-playing games share the same ancestry and this harkens all the way back to playing Dungeon & Dragons on a table top with a dungeon master, funny-sided dice, and little painted models. And yet the inspiration behind Crimson Shroud is even older.

And to be blunt survival isn't as difficult right now not even because of eggs (which just adds another power creep) but because arcanas like Awakening or Disco Gold (both of which are easily slotted and the former has been one of the more dominant arcanas due to how strong you can get from it while the latter can out heal full curse 28-29 minute bonezone and has made the challenge map considerably more accessible) and just the power creep of builds.Even if you don’t recognise his name the artwork is certainly reminiscent of Vagrant Story et al. Whereas crimson shroud really only has itself and its passives, of which the extra HP and HP regen is of lower value than Silver ring's AoE and Duration and lacks any arcana to compliment it at the moment. To give an idea you can sit still on 140% curse, with only base armor, health, and regen, on the bonezone at the 28-29 minute mark as enemies will be deleted with ease without threatening to end your run. In higher curses Infinite Corridors is a huge boon as there is little cooldown while it halves the enemy HP to make mobs at 180-190+ much more easily dispatched without having to rely on well timed Gorgeous Moon deletions. It also has 2 arcanas that you can easily build into to create a much stronger build that facilitates the weapon, out of bounds + crystal jail easily is one of the better builds right now with its mix of defense and offense allowing you to forgo defensive options to slot in more offensive weapons or passives. Infinite corridor by far it acts as a much better utility item providing both offense and defense.
